You may wonder why 'Only the Horses' is my sound track to Barra.... Arriving off the ferry just after 8pm from Oban it was still light, so dumping my bag I went out for a walk. Following the coast road going over a hill believing I'd crossed over to west coast so carried on walking back round in a circle. By 11.30pm it was pitch black with just one or two lights in the far distance and I had been power walking the last hour to get back. Reaching midnight, the nice stroll to take in the beauty had turned into a slow jogging panic! The relaxing sound of the waves became sinister in the dark with the wind howling and only light from my camera guiding me. Seeing a sign for the ferry I thought, I must be nearly back to Castlebay. The camera charge died, adjusting to near blackness with just light in the distance to aim for, hoping the terminal is close. Then magically or freakily... I was surrounded by white horses!! They were standing still, some on the road, others on the verge. All white with shaggy manes with no sign of any tethers, wild and statuesque. They were silent, occasionally shaking their heads side to side. It was surreal... calming to see something/someone but panicking walking though all these horses that seemed to just appear out of now where. Some stepped away as I walked through but all still silent. Walking on they dissolved back into the darkness behind me. It was amazing (but crazy).
