DETROIT: AUTOMOTIVE COMPANY FORD today revealed a concept truck in its home city of Detroit that boasts new technologies the firm claims "will define future pickup trucks." Dubbed the Atlas Concept, the truck was unveiled in a theatrical display at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS). Speaking to The INQUIRER at the event, the firm's VP for global product development, Raj Nair explained how the Atlas research project has seen the introduction of innovative tech such as a 360 degree point of view camera, which gives a bird's-eye view of the truck to help position the vehicle in tight places as well as LED lights in the headlamps and tail lamps for better road illumination. "There's also some driver assist technologies involved, such as trailer back-up assist," Nair said. "This helps with the difficulty of backing up a truck and uses electronic power steering that works through a knob on the instrument panel where you can turn which way you want the trailer to go automatically." For extra efficiency, the Ford Atlas Concept features an auto start and stop shutoff technology called Ecoboost powertrain, which shuts off the engine of the truck when stopped in traffic to save fuel, and smartly suspends the feature when the truck knows it is towing.
